That's a lot of people.
Small companies have been sprouting up for several years with the specific purpose of making hearing devices look better, while other people have started campaigns about being proud to show your hearing aids.
Another social media campaign caught our eye recently: #HearingAidsRock
Born partially deaf, Jenelle Joanne Ramsami is the person behind this latest campaign. We had the chance to ask her a few questions about #HearingAidsRock, and here's what she had to say.

1. How did you become passionate about raising awareness for the hearing impaired?
“I went to a deaf and hard of hearing school, then a mainstream college. I became an inspiring model to help me built my self confidence. I competed in modeling pageants with hearing models, so I have lived through all the judgement, ridicule and insults dished out due to human nature lack of knowledge and fear of anything different from them. I want to be the VOICE that leads the deaf and hard of hearing community in breaking the silence such as hashtag #HearingAidsRock to empower and inspire throughout the world.”
2. What do you think is the biggest misconception about hearing aids and other hearing technology?
“Human nature has allowed the majority of the public to conceive a person with a hearing aids as dumb, because of the lack of knowledge, they tend to scream, say things very slowly and also attempt to try and imitate a sign language of sort.”
3. What do you believe is the single greatest benefit of improving your hearing with hearing aids (or other ways)?
“Hearing aids are our tool and to open full of possibilities that can lead a better future such as in workplace, social gathering etc. It allows us to communicate much better with everyone giving the deaf and hard of hearing community a chance to hear and enabling us to clarify our mispronounced words.”
